The Beginner’s Guide to Reformer Pilates
If you’re thinking about starting Reformer Pilates but feel a little nervous, you’re not alone! We’ve had lots of interest from first-timers, and trust us — it’s totally normal to feel unsure about what to expect. But here’s the good news: Rebound Reformer Pilates is a space for everyone, regardless of experience, fitness level, or flexibility. Our friendly instructors are here to guide you every step of the way.
To help you feel confident and ready for your first class, we’ve put together this beginner’s guide on what to wear, what to bring, and what to expect. By the end of this blog, you’ll feel ready to hit the Reformer like a pro.
What to Wear to Your First Reformer Pilates Class
The key to a great Pilates session is feeling comfortable and free to move. Here’s what we recommend:
Fitted Activewear: Wear clothing that’s form-fitting but comfortable. Leggings, bike shorts, and fitted tanks or tees are perfect. Avoid baggy clothes as they can get in the way when you’re on the Reformer bed.
Grip Socks (a Must-Have!): For both safety and hygiene, grip socks are required for all Rebound Reformer Pilates classes. These special socks have rubber grips on the soles, giving you extra traction and stability on the machine. If you don’t have a pair yet, don’t stress — we’ve got them available to purchase in the studio.
No Shoes Required: Pilates is done barefoot or with grip socks, so you’ll be able to kick off your trainers as soon as you arrive.
Pro Tip: Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you cool as you work up a sweat. You can also bring a gym towel to stay extra comfortable!
What to Bring to Your Reformer Pilates Class
One of the best parts about Reformer Pilates is that it’s low-maintenance — no heavy gym bags required! Here’s all you need:
Water Bottle: Stay hydrated! Pilates is low-impact but still a workout, and hydration is key to recovery.
Small Towel: If you tend to work up a sweat, a small towel can help you stay comfortable during class.
Positive Vibes: This might sound cheesy, but bring a positive attitude. Our instructors are here to support you, so show up with an open mind, ready to try something new.
That’s it! No need for bulky gym gear or loads of extras — we’ve got everything else covered.
What to Expect in Your First Reformer Pilates Class
Walking into a Pilates studio for the first time can feel a little intimidating. But we’re here to make sure you feel at ease from the moment you step in. Here’s exactly what you can expect at Rebound Reformer Pilates:
A Warm Welcome: Our instructors will greet you and make sure you feel at home. If you’re feeling a little unsure, just let us know — we’re happy to answer any questions and help you get settled.
Small Group Classes: Classes are capped at 10 people, ensuring you get plenty of guidance and attention. Our instructors get to know you, offering modifications and challenges based on your personal needs.
All Levels Welcome: Our classes are inclusive of all fitness levels. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have been doing Pilates for years, everyone works together in the same class. Our instructors tailor the exercises to suit each individual’s needs, so no one’s left behind.
The Class Itself: Each class runs for 50 minutes. You’ll move through a series of controlled, low-impact exercises on the Reformer bed. Expect a mix of strength, core, and flexibility work. If you’re unfamiliar with the equipment, don’t worry — your instructor will guide you through every move.
You’ll Feel Amazing: You’ll leave feeling lengthened, strengthened, and a little taller (seriously!). While it’s normal to feel a bit sore the next day (hello, muscles you didn’t know you had), it’s all part of the process.
